Te Tahi Waka 2009-2010

- Reconstructed Kayak

Rescued from Disposal

Found beneath a garage in central Wellington and due to be disposed of, I rescued this kayak to recondition and fit out to be both usable and stylised.

Sand, Patch, Rebuild

Then comes the long process of sanding back the paint work to the fibre glass surface. Patching the cracks and holes in the hull and rebuilding the body with fibreglass and resin.

Design and Remodel

After the hull has been repaired and shaped I set about the design and remodelling of the overall kayak. The graphic design reflects the water and the nature of water as the waka cuts its way through the waves.

Carvings

The carvings are made out of golden kauri, this is a traditional timber used by the Maori to build waka, and works very well with water based applications as its very resilient, and has a beautiful grain and colour to it. The carvings are a mix of modern and traditional designs.
